Frequency Electronics Space Clock Maintaining Continuous Operation for 33 Years

Jul 1, 2010

MITCHEL FIELD, N.Y., July 1, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Frequency Electronics, Inc.'s (Nasdaq:FEIM) space clock aboard NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft has hit a performance milestone with continuous operation for 12,000 days, nearly 33 years.

This quartz clock produced by Frequency, provides the reference signal for Voyager receivers and transmitters which allow it to communicate with Earth stations. As reported by NASA, Voyager has traveled over 13 billion miles, returning data about the giant outer planets and solar wind between and beyond those planets. Voyagers 1 and 2 are the two most distant human-made objects in space. They are expected to enter interstellar space in the next five years or so. A signal from the ground, traveling at the speed of light, takes over 12 hours one-way to reach Voyager 2.

Frequency is proud to have been instrumental in the success of the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 missions. Voyager is one of more than 120 space programs Frequency has supported over its 48-year history. Frequency is recognized as a world leader in development and production of high-technology frequency, timing, synchronization and microwave products for space, military and commercial applications. Frequency expects to apply this outstanding technological legacy to an increasing volume of space opportunities in this fiscal year.
